Swedish Meat Sauce

While rehydrating meatballs would use up all the fuel in our camp stoves, this Swedish Meat Sauce rehydrates more quickly. It may not be as pretty as regular Swedish Meatballs but the flavor is excellent. Serve it with some thick noodles or instant mashed potatoes and you will have a hearty trail meal.

Serves 2

Tools Needed:

Pot or skillet, and a cup


  • 1 beef bouillon cube
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 teaspoon minced dried onions
  • 2 tbsp chopped dried mushrooms
  • 2 tbsp dried milk powder
  • 2 tbsp dehydrated ground beef
  • 2 tbsp dried peas (optional)
  • 2 tbsp flour, separated


Add all ingredients except the flour to your lightweight container of choice. Then pack the flour in a separate small container. At your campsite, mix the contents of the main ingredients with enough water to cover them. Simmer over your heat source until the ground beef is rehydrated, adding water if needed. Meanwhile prepare your noodles or mashed potatoes. When the beef is rehydrated, mix the flour with a bit of water in a cup until you make a smooth paste. Slowly add more water until the mixture is the consistency of heavy cream. Then slowly pour the flour mixture into the pot stirring the whole time. Let the mixture cook a minute or two more until the sauce is well thickened.
